How To Search Google For Country Specific Results

Running an international online business with the capability to service people from any country means that you want your site to perform well not only in local country specific results but also global results. You may not realise this but doing a standard Google search and leaving the “full web” option selected doesn’t necessarily give you your website’s true location in the Google global results. It gives you the global results given your location.

For example, the results of doing a full web search in my home city of Brisbane Australia will be different to a full web search from Toronto Canada.

Google gives results based on your location even when you are not stipulating a local result. You can click your local country only result button and get sites that are from your home country, usually determined by the domain name extension, for example .com.au for Australia, .ca for Canada, etc. or the IP address of your web hosting server, or you can click the web option and get global Internet results that vary depending on your computer’s location in the world (based on the IP address of the computer you are using to access the Internet).

Think Global

If your business can service the world then you really can’t ignore the American marketplace, or if you are in the USA don’t forget about Europe, Asia and the rest. Hence you need to know how well your site is performing in Google global search results and unfortunately simply ticking the “the web” option in Google when searching can be misleading because your ranking will be different if it was someone in a different country doing the exact same search.

What you want to know is when someone in the the UK does a Google search for one of your terms, how high is your website up in the search results? With this little trick you can figure it out.

The Code

All you need to do is add &gl=uk to the URL at the end of the Google search query.

For example:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=sample+query&meta=&gl=uk

This tells Google to spit out the results for the query based on UK servers.

I can’t guarantee 100% conclusively that this works as I expect it does, but it definitely does something and you should try it yourself and see if your site shows up in a different place in the results. The “gl” stands for Geographic Location and of course you can interchange the last letters to test different country results around the world.

Google Cash Frenzy

Google, sometimes referred to as the Big G, has once again proved to the world that it still is the dominant and greatly profitable leader in the Internet search market. Recent reports indicate profits are up 110% to $721m in the three months to June 2006. Much of these Google profits come from their clever and very successful advertising program called Google Adwords.

Google, essentially a search company, had gained market dominance through smart ranking technologies that provided the user with the most relevant search results ever possible to date. It??s simple user interface, coupled with smart algorithms combined with a snappy name and logo has made it the most used search engine today, putting itself years ahead from it??s closest rivals. A listing for a targeted search term in the first page or two of Google??s organic listing is every webmaster??s dream. This means huge success in terms of traffic, sales and hence money in the bank! But, unfortunately, it is not possible for every website to be listed on the first page or two. Google saw the potential for offering paid listings that will appear alongside organic results for a search term. In this way, a webmaster can still get his website onto the first page or two under sponsored listings but for a price. Google launched their pay-per-click program ?” an advertiser only pays when someone clicks their ad, called it Adwords and the rest, as they say, is history!

Google then followed up with a progam called Adsense which is linked to Adwords. Adsense is where any ordinary webmaster (called a publisher) can display relevant ads from Google??s advertisers on their site. When a user to that site clicks an ad, Google pays them a percentage of that click cost.

Google, by it??s very existence, has given webmasters a chance to earn money in ways that wouldn??t have been possible. Currently, people make cash out of Google by using Adwords and/or Adsense. Thousands of ordinary people are sharing in on Google??s success and profits, making for themselves nice checks every month in the process. Let??s see how.

Adwords

Adwords are used by off-line and online businesses alike to advertise their products or services. But, for ordinary people, that??s not where the money is. Thousands of people are combining the versatility of affiliate programs with the reach of Adwords, making themselves a lot of money in the process.

People search for products that they can promote and more people turn to www.clickbank.com for this. Clickbank, a large Internet company, acts as reseller, payment processor and affiliate commission payer all in one. It works like this. A publisher, wanting to sell his/her products signs up with Clickbank and enters Clickbank??s marketplace. Affiliates wanting to promote the publisher??s products, signs up with Clickbank first as an affiliate and obtains an ID which is used in a special link called a hop link.

The affiliate then markets the publisher??s products by way of advertising, especially on Google Adwords (but can be by any other means although Google Adwords produces best results) in an effort to drive traffic to the site of the publisher. If the referral results in a sale, Clickbank processes the transaction, takes a percentage of the sale, allocates the commission to the affiliate and the balance to the publisher. Clickbank pays affiliates and publishers every two weeks.

This appeal and popularity lies in the fact that affiliates don??t need to have a product or website of their own and the commissions offered are very generous, sometimes as high as 75% of the product price. Affiliates also have the luxury of marketing a number of products from different publishers all at once.

But, a word of warning. Adwords is a bit intricate and very few people understand the system fully. If you don??t know what you are doing, you can lose a lot of money in a very short space of time. My advice would be to learn the system thoroughly, try a few small test campaigns and tweak as you go along. Never spend more than what you feel comfortable with and intensify your campaign only when you see positive results.

Adsense

Here, publishers on Google??s Content Network receive a commission when someone clicks on Google ads on their site. When an advertiser advertises with Adwords, he is given a few options. He can advertise on Google Search ?” ads appear as sponsored results alongside organic search results when users search using Google??s Search Engine, Google Search Network ?” ads appear on Google??s search partners and Content Network ?” independent websites that host Google ads ie. the Adsense sites we are talking about.

Participating in Google Adsense is relatively easy. You simply sign up for free at Google and when your site has been approved, you will be given Javacript code that you place on your website. Google provides publishers a range of options when it comes to ad sizes and colors in order to complement their site??s design and theme.

There are numerous tips to increase your Adsense revenue ?” too numerous to mention in this little article but I??ll tell you the most important ones. Firstly, build a website for the user and not Adsense. Put quality, fresh content that is relevant to your website and not duplicate, trashy content. Google is clamping down on sites made just for Adsense that offer the user no real benefit. Secondly, optimize your web pages correctly. Lastly, concentrate all your efforts on getting good, regular traffic to your site - after all, if no one visits your site, who will click on the ads?

Yes, making money with Google is possible but won??t happen overnight. Continuously research and test but most of all go slow, put in some hard work and keep up with it! All the best!

Do Search Engines Care About Valid HTML?

Like most web developers, I??ve heard a lot about the importance of valid html recently. I??ve read about how it makes it easier for people with disabilities to access your site, how it??s more stable for browsers, and how it will make your site easier to be indexed by the search engines.

So when I set out to design my most recent site, I made sure that I validated each and every page of the site. But then I got to thinking ?” while it may make my site easier to index, does that mean that it will improve my search engine rankings? How many of the top sites have valid html?

To get a feel for how much value the search engines place on being html validated, I decided to do a little experiment. I started by downloading the handy Firefox HTML Validator Extension (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/) that shows in the corner of the browser whether or not the current page you are on is valid html. It shows a green check when the page is valid, an exclamation point when there are warnings, and a red x when there are serious errors.

I decided to use Yahoo! Buzz Index to determine the top 5 most searched terms for the day, which happened to be ??World Cup 2006?, ??WWE?, ??FIFA?, ??Shakira?, and ??Paris Hilton?. I then searched each term in the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) and checked the top 10 results for each with the validator. That gave me 150 of the most important data points on the web for that day.

The results were particularly shocking to me ?” only 7 of the 150 resulting pages had valid html (4.7%). 97 of the 150 had warnings (64.7%) while 46 of the 150 received the red x (30.7%). The results were pretty much independent of search engine or term. Google had only 4 out of 50 results validate (8%), MSN had 3 of 50 (6%), and Yahoo! had none. The term with the most valid results was ??Paris Hilton? which turned up 3 of the 7 valid pages. Now I realize that this isn??t a completely exhaustive study, but it at least shows that valid html doesn??t seem to be much of a factor for the top searches on the top search engines.

Even more surprising was that none of the three search engines home pages validated! How important is valid html if Google, Yahoo!, and MSN don??t even practice it themselves? It should be noted, however, that MSN??s results page was valid html. Yahoo??s homepage had 154 warnings, MSN??s had 65, and Google??s had 22. Google??s search results page not only didn??t validate, it had 6 errors!

In perusing the web I also noticed that immensely popular sites like ESPN.com, IMDB, and MySpace don??t validate. So what is one to conclude from all of this?

It??s reasonable to conclude that at this time valid html isn??t going to help you improve your search position. If it has any impact on results, it is minimal compared to other factors. The other reasons to use valid html are strong and I would still recommend all developers begin validating their sites; just don??t expect that doing it will catapult you up the search rankings right now.

Make Money from Home with AdSense

Google through their AdSense program, offers paid advertising through the use of text linked ads placed on websites. These ads can also be placed on blogs. Advertisers hope to convince visitors to click on the text ad and visit their own websites through these text linked ads. The advertisers pay Google for every visitor that clicks through. Google passes on some of the money to the owner of the websites where the click originated. This is know as PPC or pay per click. Savvy Internet marketers build websites on topics that have a high PPC with the sole purpose of earning money.

Some of these sites known as MFA or Made For AdSense contain little or no redeeming content. The website’s owner’s intent is to place high in the search engines for a niche key word phrase. Say “Natural Cures for Whatever.” People have a tendency to only look at the first page of results when searching. They click on the “Natural Cures for Whatever” site. When they arrive there is little information, so in an effort to leave the site quickly, they click on one of the text linked ads to navigate away.

A better philosophy is to make the site content rich to attract visitors and establish a level of trust. The visitor feels comfortable and when they’ve found the information they needed they are more likely to click on one of the text based ads.

How much money can you earn with AdSense? It depends on the topic of your website, your key word usage and your traffic. People look for all sorts of information on the Internet. Quite a bit of the time they’re looking for a solution to a problem or how-to-do something. If your website addresses those issues, the odds are it will make more money than a generic site.

You have to have a website already up and running before you apply for AdSense. They are accepting blogs for AdSense revenue as well. Once you get one blog or website approved you can add the AdSense to your other sites/blogs without additional approval.

Once you’re approved you have your choice of style and size of ad. You don’t have to do any of the coding. You do have to know how to incorporate the code on your website or blog. It’s not difficult. You can track how much money you’re making nearly in real time.

You can make money from home using AdSense.
